This month the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) hands over the future responsibilities for the Community of Practice ‘Numeracy for Development’ to Team Numeracy of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and Save the Children. We will continue the successful work of the Global Partnership which started the community of practice in 2012. Numeracy will remain our focus and we will also continue with the monthly webinars and provide a platform for knowledge exchange.

The focus of the February webinar will be on ‘Teacher training in mathematics using ICT’. Debashree Roy, from GIZ’s Team Numeracy, will provide a brief overview of the topic followed by an open discussion.

Debashree Roy’s presentation will explore the potential of using mobile technologies for improving the quality of numeracy education through teacher training. Teacher education using ICT is a topic much discussed among the education community, and highlighted by UNESCO. However, the use of ICT for teacher education, despite its advantages, also faces severe challenges, especially in the context of low-income countries. Therefore, Ms. Roy’s presentation will place this topic in the context of mathematics education and invite an active round of discussion.

The Sector Program Numeracy implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and GPE looks at different aspects of numeracy education in the early grades, including learning outcomes assessments, utilizing synergies and lessons learned from literacy for numeracy, general numeracy skills development in pre-school and early grades and mobile education and numeracy. Since mobile education and mathematics forms one of its main focus areas, the webinar will discuss the potential use of mobile technologies for teacher education in mathematics.

The webinar series is part of a GPE Community of Practice (CoP) ‘Numeracy for Development’, now facilitated by the GIZ and Save the Children. The CoP is open to teachers, educators, practitioners, researchers, academics and others interested in numeracy.
