Rihanna leads campaign for increased global education funding with visit to Malawi

As founder of the Clara Lionel Foundation and Global Ambassador for the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), Rihanna visited Malawi in January 2017. The trip was organized jointly by GPE and Global Citizen and allowed Rihanna to spend time with key educators, the Malawian President and Minister of Education, mentors, and students who are working collaboratively to build a better future for the next generation of Malawians.

Rihanna was joined on the trip by Julia Gillard, former Prime Minister of Australia and Board Chair of the Global Partnership for Education and Hugh Evans, CEO of Global Citizen.

In 2016, Rihanna formed a partnership with GPE, the only global fund exclusively focused on education in developing countries and international advocacy organization Global Citizen to tackle the global education crisis through advocacy.

In the lead up to headlining the annual 2016 Global Citizen Festival in Central Park, she called on her fans to ask their governments to increase their commitments to education in emergencies. In response, Canada pledged to invest US$20 million to the Education Cannot Wait fund, with France committing a further US$2 million.

Rihanna is now calling on her fans and Global Citizens to join her in supporting GPE’s next replenishment effort to raise US$3.1 billion from donors around the world. These funds would help GPE bring quality education to over 870 million children in 89 countries between 2018 and 2020.
