In Yemen, Breaking Barriers to Girls' Education
In Yemen, girls, especially if they live in remote rural areas, often do not have the opportunity to get an education. In particular, the low number of female teachers contribute to the low enrollment of girls in school. A new Basic Education Project supported by the World Bank aims to recruit, train and deploy 700 female teachers in rural areas and provide conditional cash transfers to 25,000 students to ensure they go to school. The project also focuses on enhancing students’ reading skills in the first three years of primary school. The Global Partnership for Education will provide a grant to support training and hiring of rural female teachers.
