Jacque Jumbe-Kahura

Jacqueline Jumbe is a volunteer teacher of Makonjemare primary school in Kilifi County, Kenya and Founder and Executive Director of Lifting the Barriers, an Education and development charity organization based in rural Kenya. 

She completed her Diploma in Education at Kisii Teachers College, her Bachelor’s degree in education at the University of Nairobi and her Master’s in Education and International Development at the Institute of Education (IOE), university of London. 

She also received a diploma in Community development from Kenya Institute of Social Work and Community Development.  Before founding Lifting the Barriers in 2009, Jacque spent 14 years teaching in vocational training centers, primary and secondary schools and 6 years with a non governmental organization before returning back to teaching as a volunteer in 2011. 

Jacque has innovated several school programs and campaigns like Learning Companion, Every Girl…Campaign, Partnership for More Joint Action on HIV/AIDs Prevention and Management (PAMOJA), Weekend Inclusive and School Holiday (W.I.S.H) project and Teachers as Educators, Administrators, Caregivers and Healers (T.E.A.C.H). 

She is the author of the Walimu Kwanza! (Teachers First!) newsletter and is currently assembling a Center for Teachers and Students (CTS) within her office for teachers and students to embrace ICT as a strategic enabler for teaching and learning.

 In addition to working with schools, she enjoys supporting women move from dependence to self reliance through training, coaching and mentoring. She currently lives in Kilifi with her husband and two children and is working on her first book, Beyond Exams!
