Madina Bocoum Daff is Plan International Mali’s Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Project Manager.. The majority of girls in her family, including Madina, have been excised and, in most cases by infibulation, the most severe form of FGM. In 2001, Plan International Mali asked Madina if she wanted to coordinate a project to fight against FGM. Madina knew her family would have difficulty accepting her new role, but she worked hard to overcome any barriers her family presented. Once Madina reminded her mother of the complications her family had faced from FGM, Madina’s new role was accepted. Today, Madina is fully committed to ending FGM in Mali and beyond, raising awareness of the risks of this harmful practice locally, nationally and internationally.
