One year after the adoption of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development, world leaders gather in New York for the annual United Nations General Assembly. GPE will participate in several events through representation by our board chair Julia Gillard, CEO Alice Albright, members of our board and our partner organizations.
Once again, education will be front and center throughout the week. Below are some highlights:
Sunday, September 18
Education Commission Report Launch

Convened in Oslo in 2015, the International Commission on Financing Global Education Opportunity—the Education Commission—was tasked with developing a renewed and compelling investment case and financing pathway for achieving equal educational opportunity for children and young people.
After a year of research and input from hundreds through consultations, the Education Commission will release its report in New York, an agenda for action to close the skills gap around the world by 2030.
World’s Largest Lesson

Education Equity by 2030: Met by All

A panel discussion highlighting the latest progress made in understanding and achieving education equity, followed by a reception with refreshments and hors d’oeuvres.
Organized by the Education Equity Research Initiative, this event will bring together change makers leading global and national efforts to establish standards and practices for measuring and addressing inequality in education. They will discuss ways forward for greater understanding and accountability to ensure inclusive and quality education for all by 2030.
Skills for a changing world: Acknowledging progress and building momentum

The Center for Universal Education (CUE) at Brookings and the LEGO Foundation will co-host a reception to highlight Skills for a Changing World, an initiative they launched in collaboration with multiple partners to explore high quality learning opportunities that build the breadth of skills needed for vibrant, healthy societies. The evening will offer an opportunity to discuss changing social and economic landscapes as well as the work being done to prepare young people for life, learning, and work.
The event will kick off with an interactive activity led by Kathy Hirsh-Pasek, senior fellow at CUE and a short panel discussion moderated by Anya Kamenetz, lead education blogger at NPR. The discussion will focus on ways to foster the collective strength of progress made toward achieving breadth of skills and learning opportunities across ages and contexts.

Closing the skills gap through global education

This event will be co-hosted by the Center for Global Education (CGE) at Asia Society, the Center for Universal Education at Brookings and The New York Academy of Sciences' Global STEM Alliance, and focus on the importance of quality learning and the development of skills for the 21st century. A range speakers, including Andreas Schleicher, Director for Education and Skills at OECD and CGE Advisor, and stakeholders from various disciplines and diverse perspectives will discuss the changing global landscape and the skills needed to prepare young people for the future of learning, work, and life.

Multi-stakeholder partnerships are encouraging multi-sectorial actions that are transforming the health, nutrition, food security, sanitation and education of individuals, communities and nations.
Organized by GPE, Every Woman Every Child, Scaling Up Nutrition, Sanitation and Water for All, and Zero Hunger Challenge, this high-level panel event will highlight the importance of working across sectors through country-led partnership to empower women, children and adolescents, to thrive and transform the world.

Education for people and planet: Creating sustainable futures for all

The 2016 Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report is the first report in a newly mandated fifteen-year series. This year’s agenda-setting report examines the intersectoral and reciprocal links between education and key facets of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, and discusses strategies and challenges in reviewing and monitoring Sustainable Development Goal 4 and its 10 targets, presenting policy makers with core recommendations to support decision-making.
During this high-level round-table the major findings of the 2016 GEM Report will be shared with ministers, permanent missions, UN staff and agencies, and other key partners. The discussion will focus on the key recommendations from the 2016 Global Education Monitoring Report.
