Earlier this week, the Global Partnership for Education disbursed $6.95 million in emergency funding to address urgent education needs in the region of Lake Chad.

Chad has been at the forefront of several humanitarian crises and has been impacted by both the Sahel food crisis and the financial crisis following the decrease in oil prices.

The $6.95 million grant will benefit 8,500 children both refugees and displaced who will have access to school lunches and improved learning environments.

More specifically, the grant will support the construction of 86 permanent classrooms, 25 wells and 80 latrines; fund more than 60,000 textbooks and other school supplies for students and teachers; provide micronutrients and parasite treatment to students in the entire Lake Chad region; and provide in-service training for 877 teachers and functional training for more than 1,000 youths.

Ensuring that children’s education continues during emergencies is a priority for GPE, which in 2012 developed and adopted an accelerated funding mechanism to better respond to country emergencies.
