Nepal will need help to rebuild its education system

In this photo taken in late 2014, children play joyfully during their lunch break at Adash Saula Yubak School in Lalitpur, Nepal.

At the time, they had no idea that their country would experience the tragedy of two major earthquakes on April 25 and May 12 that cost more than 8,000 people their life and left  the capital and many cities and villages devastated.

The government estimates that 15,000 classrooms have been destroyed and the school system has shut down. The country will need time to assess its needs to rebuild. The Global Partnership for Education stands ready to help. Next week, our Board will consider a new grant for Nepal for US$59.3 million, which can be re-allocated to cover emergency needs if requested by the Nepali government.

I did some volunteer work in 2014 with Sharada of NASL in beginning to train school libraries. She showed me many of the school libraries, met with her NASL volunteers, and met with school librarians. Much needs to be done in this realm. There are very few schools with computers and most of the books in the school libraries are old and out of date. I hope at some point to go back there to work again with this dynamic woman and all she has contributed to establishing school libraries around all of Nepal. Any work we in the west can do will be valuable. Would be wonderful to,have a mobile library for outlying areas which could serve both children and adults...something we looked at in OMan when I worked there for its outlying areas. HSBC bank was a valuable partner. We need wonderful children's and other books translated into the language of Nepal. The American Embassy in Abu Dhabi set up a program for translating English books into Arabic. Would love to see this happen for Nepal. Please let me know how I can help other than contributing money.
