A new grant for Puntland, Somalia to strengthen its education system

Despite the ongoing conflict that has taken a serious toll on education in Somalia there is strong commitment to ensure quality education and a better future for all Somali children.

When Somalia joined GPE in 2012 as a federal state the first ever education sector plans for South and Central Somalia, Puntland and Somaliland were developed. It was a major achievement to get all partners together and agreeing on common approaches for systematic and coherent support, away from fragmented emergency response.

Now, the government of Puntland has received an Education Sector Plan Development Grant from GPE to develop a new plan for 2016 and beyond Save the Children has been nominated by the local education group to supervise the grant implementation. This is the first time that Save the Children, a key GPE partner will act in this capacity.

Education Sector Plan Development Grants from the Global Partnership for Education are intended to help countries perform strategic, consultative and analytical work to develop new or revise their existing sector plan.

Puntland has also received a $2.1 million dollar grant for 2013-2016 which mainly supports the payment of teacher salaries, as well as the training and deployment of female teachers to pastoralist areas.
