Picture of the Week

These students at Kuje Science Primary School in Abuja, Nigeria, just finished their school day. As they exit their classrooms, they are surprised by the visit of unusual guests: Gordon Brown, UN Special Envoy for Global Education and other members of a high-level delegation who visited Abuja to discuss ways to accelerate progress on getting all Nigerian children in school for a quality education by 2015. In Nigeria, there are still 10.5 million children who don’t go to school. It’s the country with largest number of out-of-school children.

On September 9, the President of Nigeria along with his ministers, state governors and state education commissioners, met with international partners such as the Special Envoy, the Global Partnership for Education, non-governmental organizations and private sector leaders to discuss how best to get all Nigerian children in school and learning. Nigeria joined the Global Partnership for Education in November 2012 and is eligible for a program implementation grant of up to $100 million.
