In this op-ed, Serigne Mbaye Thiam, Vice-chair of the GPE Board of Directors, states that good progress has been made in ensuring more children are in school and learning with the support of global actors such as the Global Partnership for Education, and thanks to the knowledge and experience of countries like China.
However, in many regions of the world, particularly in Africa, progress has been uneven. Of the 63 million primary school-age children that are not in school, more than half live in sub-Saharan Africa. Africa's population will double by 2050, and collective, concerted efforts are required to prevent a rise in the number of out-of-school children. The Chinese model is an example from which Africa should learn as much as possible.
