African superstar announces collaboration with the Global Partnership for Education
Dakar, November 1st, 2019. The global education family is gaining a powerful new advocate. Youssou Ndour announced today in Dakar that he will collaborate with the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) to champion the importance of a quality education for all children.
“I am excited to join forces with the Global Partnership for Education to promote the right to education for all children throughout Africa,” said Youssou Ndour. “My hope is that I can use my voice to help drive political leaders to address the learning crisis and to reform and properly finance education systems across the continent. Our children are Africa’s future. We must give them hope and the opportunity of a quality education.”
The global learning crisis is most acute in sub-Saharan where approximately 100 million children are not attending school and millions more are in the classroom but are not learning. World Bank data released this month shows 87% of children in Africa will not be able to read by age 10.
“We are delighted to welcome Youssou Ndour to the GPE family”, said Alice Albright, Chief Executive Officer, Global Partnership for Education. “We are thrilled that such a prominent figure, known internationally as one of Africa’s musical superstars, is willing to share his time and talents to bring more attention to the transformative power of education.”
“I am proud that Senegal once again shows leadership on the global development agenda by putting education first, and that we can share our ‘national treasure’ in support of this great cause,” said Serigne Mbaye Thiam, Vice-chair of the GPE Board of Directors and Minister for Water and Sanitation of Senegal.
