Aid to education

In Spain, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MAEC) is responsible for development cooperation policy and for coordination with other contributing ministries.

Within MAEC, the Secretary General for International Development Cooperation (SGCID) is the head of Spain’s Agency for Development (AECID). While AECID is the managing body of Spain’s development cooperation, SGCID takes a more strategic role in policy, planning and evaluation.

The “Master Plan for Spanish Cooperation 2018-2021” outlines seven priorities, all linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  1. zero hunger
  2. good health and well-being
  3. quality education
  4. gender equality
  5. clean water and sanitation
  6. decent work and economic growth
  7. peace, justice and strong institutions.

In 2017, the top recipients of basic education ODA disbursement were: Bolivia, DRC, Haiti, Guatemala, El Salvador.
