Please join us for our May numeracy webinar with Dr. Anthony Essien from the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. Dr. Essien will present research on the experience of South African primary school teachers in teaching mathematics in home languages.

He will discuss the Gauteng Primary Language and Mathematics Strategy (GPLMS), a set of multilingual mathematics materials to equip teachers with the necessary skills to teach mathematics and help learners better understand and engage with mathematics. The GPLMS uses lesson plans and coaches to strengthen language and mathematics learning in close to 1,000 priority primary schools in Gauteng. In this presentation, Dr. Essien will share the challenges both teachers and learners grapple with as they use these multilingual mathematics materials and to what extent the mathematics approach adopted in the GPLMS schools enable or constrain the teaching and learning of mathematics.

Dr. Anthony A. Essien is a senior lecturer in Mathematics Education at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. He is also the associate editor of Pythagoras Journal – the academic and professional journal of the Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa. His field of research is in pre-service mathematics teacher education in contexts where teaching and learning occur in multilingual classrooms, more specifically in contexts of the preparation of pre-service teachers for teaching mathematics in multilingual classrooms.

Dr. Essien completed his PhD studies at the University of the Witwatersrand with a thesis entitled: “Preparing pre-service mathematics teachers to teach in multilingual classrooms: A community of practice perspective”. He is the author of numerous publications including those jointly published by Nuria Planas, Nancy Chitera, Jill Adler and Mamokgethi Pakeng (previously Mamokgethi Setati).
