The April webinar will focus on a regional landscape review of early numeracy education in the Arab countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

In this webinar, Dr. Mohammed Matar, lead author and Director of the Assessment and Evaluation Department at the Ministry of Education in Palestine, will present some of the key results of the landscape review on ‘Early Grade Mathematics Education in Arab Countries of the Middle East and North Africa’. The review intends to open up policy dialogue about the challenges and opportunities in numeracy education—a dialogue relevant and timely to many countries across the world. The landscape review was commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the Islamic Development Bank for the 2013 All Children Learning Workshop in Morocco.

The webinar will cover an analysis of the data from MENA, implications for learning outcomes in mathematics, and approaches and concepts of mathematics education as well as policy implications. While the analysis looks specifically at data from the MENA region, the challenges and bottlenecks are often similar across countries with low learning outcomes in numeracy. Join the webinar to learn more about the challenges and the way forward in the MENA region, as well as to reflect on similarities and differences across different regions in the world.

Dr. Matar’s career and research interests focus on assessment and evaluation of children’s learning, particularly in mathematics as well as in the cost-benefit analysis of different approaches to mathematics instruction. He is committed to the inclusion of mathematics education in the early learning agenda. Dr. Matar helped develop the first math curriculum for Palestine.
