In 80 districts in Uganda, early grade teachers are receiving training to teach in local languages under the Uganda Teacher and School Effectiveness Project through a US$100 million grant from the Global Partnership for Education. With this intervention, the government hopes to remedy low reading and writing competencies, arguing that if young children are introduced to reading in local languages, they can start to read well before being introduced to English, thus making it easier to adapt. In addition, thanks to GPE the government is recruiting and training 1,000 people to become nursery school caregivers.
