Suad Abdulraziq, Sudan’s minister of education, explains how the conflict in her country in the past few years has made it challenging to continue with the provision of education. Not only have Sudanese children been affected, but also children that come from neighboring countries, looking for the opportunity to continue their education.

The main priorities for Sudan’s education system are improving the access and quality of education, as well as training teachers to make learning more interactive and student-oriented.

In 2013, Sudan received a US$76.5 million grant from GPE to help improve the learning environment, provide more textbooks, and strengthen the education system’s planning and management mechanisms.

GPE funding has contributed to achieve the following results:

  • Implement a national learning assessment system
  • Build or rehabilitate 584 classrooms in primary school
  • Train 47 communities in school construction management.

Minister Abdulraziq believes the GPE grant has been an essential piece in building a sustainable and flexible education system in Sudan, and fostering trust among partners.
