RewirEdX is a two-day virtual conference at the one-year countdown to the RewirEd Summit. The event aims to:

  • Enhance knowledge-sharing and connectivity between education policymakers and practitioners by sharing, discussing and debating perspectives and real-life experiences in response to COVID-19, and the new reality that follows
  • Inspire and evoke participants to think beyond ‘business as usual’ by presenting emerging provocations with the aim of triggering motivation and potential pathways for cross-sector collaborations and co-creation for the future of education
  • Build consensus on key priorities and themes to take forward to the RewirEd Summit.

Below are some of the highlights of the event, in which GPE leaders and partners will participate.

Opening Plenary

Moderator: HE Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State of International Cooperation of the UAE, Director General of Expo 2020 Dubai

This session will reflect on the scale of school-closures this year, and the likely implications for students and their families; Evaluate the role for education in building back better, and what the priority investments are; Explore the role that big global moments and platforms such as the G7, G20 and Expo 2020 Dubai with RewirEd can play in defining and implementing the global education agenda; Highlight the types of partnerships needed to ensure no child is left behind without education opportunities. GPE Board Chair Julia Gillard will participate in this panel.

The future of connectivity and education

Moderator: Alice Albright, GPE CEO

This session will discuss the challenges and opportunities countries faced with responding to COVID-19 and maintaining or expanding distance learning opportunities; Reflect on the role connectivity can play in expanding learning opportunities and beyond; Highlight the types of partnerships needed to achieve universal connectivity and ensure no child is left behind from learning opportunities.

Ministerial dialogue: Looking ahead to 2021

Moderator: H.E. David Moinina Sengeh, Minister of Basic and Secondary Education and Chief Innovation Officer for the Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation, Sierra Leone

During this high-level ministerial dialogue, five ministers of Education from around the world will talk about how they are planning for the year ahead, based on their experiences with COVID-19 in this extraordinary school year.

The impact of COVID-19 on girls' education

Moderator: Erin Ganju, Managing Director at the Echidna Giving Fund

Organized by GPE and with GPE CEO Alice Albright in attendance, this session will seek to elevate the visibility of how COVID-19 is impacting girls' ability to return to school, their likelihood of dropping out, and the implications of poor transition rates between education, training and meaningful employment; Share lessons from country interventions to keep or bring girls back to school; Highlight the opportunities and entry points to protect and accelerate girls’ education.
