In March 2017, the Global Partnership for Education Secretariat approved the following grant:

US$236,600 for Sao Tome and Principe to conduct an education sector analysis (ESA)

The Education Sector Plan Development Grant will allow Sao Tome and Principe to analyze the status of the education sector, including recent developments, achievements, gaps that remain, and challenges encountered in the provision of quality education for all. The ESA is intended to improve the current evidence base for policymakers and practitioners and serve as the basis for the update of the Carta de Politica Educativa 2012-2022.

The grant will also help build government capacity by including training for the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Communication working group for certain activities (such as for data collection and for data analysis) throughout the ESA production process.

The World Bank, a key partner of the Global Partnership for Education, has been nominated by the local education group to be the grant agent on behalf of the Government of Sao Tome and Principe.

Education Sector Plan Development Grants from the Global Partnership for Education are intended to help countries perform strategic, consultative and analytical work to develop or revise their sector plan. Of the maximum grant amount of US$500,000, US$250,000 is reserved for education sector analysis, and the remainder for additional studies or to develop the sector plan.
