WASHINGTON D.C./GUATEMALA CITY, June 28, 2022 – The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) welcomed the Republic of Guatemala today as its latest member. This brings the total number of GPE partner countries to 80.

“We are pleased to welcome the Republic of Guatemala as the latest member of GPE” said Charles North, Acting CEO of GPE. “We look forward to helping Guatemala transform education by accelerating access to learning for the most marginalized children and improving gender equality across the country.”

“Joining the Global Partnership for Education represents a historic milestone for Guatemala,” said Claudia Ruiz de Estrada, Minister of Education of Guatemala. “The transformation of the educational system will contribute to reducing inequities and achieving quality learning for life. Our commitment is with the girls, boys and adolescents of the country!”

Through its membership in GPE, the government of Guatemala will receive targeted support and financing to expand access to education for the most marginalized children and improve education outcomes, so that all girls and boys in Guatemala enjoy equal education opportunities.

In Central America and the Caribbean, GPE works closely with El Salvador, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras and Nicaragua.

Notes to editors

In July 2021 in London, the Global Education Summit co-hosted by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, raised a record US$4 billion for GPE from donors. The fundraising total puts GPE firmly on the path to achieving its target of at least $5 billion, which will enable up to 175 million children to learn and help get 88 million more girls and boys in school by 2025.
